Evaluation

AS Media Studies – Coursework Evaluation

My media product uses some conventions from action/thriller films such as rapid cuts and typical fast-paced action movie soundtrack that makes the movie very energetic and heightens the tension. The use of minimal dialogue focuses all the audience’s attention on the action in the scene – similar to an actual media product. Another action/thriller film convention included is the overlaying of opening titles directly onto footage to make it seem as if everything is happening at once.

Groups that may be represented in my media product are law enforcement services – their methods and attitude may be shown to be unprofessional throughout the relentless chase. The agent in my media is also plain-clothed indicating he is an undercover operative – this may show secret services to be overly active in having agents everywhere.

My media product is not as high quality as most professionally made movies – the film and sound quality are not suitable for a commercially distributed movie. Therefore it should be presented via the internet, not highly publicised but still available for viewing by anyone that wishes.

The intended target audience for my media product would most likely be teenagers/young adults; the content of the movie would probably not be suitable for very young or very old viewers. The theme of the film is similar to action/thriller movies such as S.W.A.T – therefore it would include similar content and would probably require that the film be given a certificate of ‘15’.

The quick start to the movie and poweful soundtrack creates a tense atmosphere and draws the viewer in, capturing and holding their attention. The chase starts within the first few seconds of the film starting – the lack of an explanation for this creates intrigue in the viewer and makes them want to continue watching to discover what is going on. The sequence includes the main aspects the target audience wants in a film – action in the form of a chase sequence, death and a law enforcement organisation.

In the course of making my media product I learned how to use Pinnacle Studio 10’s more advanced features such as transitions (even though they were not used in the final product), added on during the editing phase of the project. I also learned that Pinnacle Studio was better suited to my needs than Windows Movie Maker, the latter did not separate footage into individual clips as well as Pinnacle and therefore I decided not to use it.

Since the production of the preliminary product I have learnt a lot about the production of a film. I have learned to better direct my cast, choose and utilise an appropriate location for filming and use camera angles for the purpose of suggestion and representation.
